What is the difference between Grass-Fed and Grain-Finished beef?
Penokean Hills Farms offers both Pea-Barley (grain) finished and Grass-fed beef to please both your palate and preferences. Both are born and raised on member farms in Algoma, free of added hormones and antibiotics and 100% traceable from gate to plate.
Grain-finished cattle are raised on an all vegetarian, corn-free diet, which includes peas and barley grown locally. Cattle are free to roam fields and graze, but are finished on the special pea-barley diet to produce tender, tasty cuts of beef. Penokean Hills Farms received the 2009 Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation for this pea-barely finishing diet.
Grass-finished cattle are free to roam fields, grazing on green pastures and forages. Grass-finished beef is seasonal as these animals are processed in the summer/fall for optimal nutrient content in the meat. Grass-finished sides are typically available beginning in July through December (depending on demand). Individual cuts and bulk box quantities are available year-round. Grass-finished beef is a good source of conjugated linoleic acid, a fatty acid which can aid in lowering serum cholesterol and enhance immune response.
